(Gray News) - After three weeks of qualifying, a Minor tournament and a holiday break, the final weekend of the Call of Duty League (CDL) Major I qualifiers is here. The 12 CDL teams have been duking it out since the first weekend of December for seeding in the first Major of the 2025 CDL season. After this weekend’s qualifying matches, the top eight teams in the standings will receive a berth into the Major I winner’s bracket. The remaining four teams will be subject to the stress of beginning their season in the loser’s bracket, where there is no cushion if they have an off day.

Only one team below the current winner’s bracket cutline has a tangible chance at hopping the fence and forcing another to face a loser’s bracket start. Four teams are straddling the cutline involved with this potential shift in seeding, so who are they, and what matches matter this weekend?

Matches on Friday, January 24th:

  • Carolina Royal Ravens vs. Vancouver Surge - 3 PM EST / 2 PM CST / 12 PM PST
  • Miami Heretics vs. Los Angeles Thieves - 4:30 PM EST / 3:30 PM CST / 1:30 PM PST
  • Boston Breach vs. Atlanta FaZe - 6 PM EST / 5 PM CST / 3 PM PST

Right off the bat, in Friday’s opening match, the Vancouver Surge, who sit with a 2-3 record and 7th in the standings, take on the Carolina Royal Ravens. This match only means holding onto a top 3 seeding in Major I for the Royal Ravens. But, for the Surge, this is a must-win match to give themselves some breathing room on the winner’s bracket cutline. If the Surge loses this matchup, their match record will tie the Minnesota RØKKR, who sit 9th in the standings. The crazy thing is that this scenario is the same for every single one of the matchups on Friday afternoon.

The Los Angeles Thieves and the Boston Breach have the same 4-1 record as the Royal Ravens. So if they lose, then they will move lower in the seeding but still be in the winner’s bracket. The Miami Heretics and Atlanta FaZe, like the Surge, have 2-3 records. So if they lose their matches, there will be a four-way tie on the winner’s bracket cutline at 2-4 going into Saturday. Out of the Heretics, FaZe, and Surge, FaZe has the best chance of winning their matchup. They won Minor I, showing they still have what it takes to be gutsy and win no matter the circumstance.

Matches on Saturday, January 25th:

  • Vancouver Surge vs. Minnesota RØKKR - 3 PM EST / 2 PM CST / 12 PM PST
  • Vegas Falcons vs. Los Angeles Guerrillas M8 - 4:30 PM EST / 3:30 PM CST / 1:30 PM PST
  • Miami Heretics vs. Carolina Royal Ravens - 6 PM EST / 5 PM CST / 3 PM PST

The first match of Saturday is pivotal for the winner’s bracket cutline battle this weekend. RØKKR is taking on the Surge in their only bid to advance into the winner’s bracket. RØKKR must win this matchup no matter the outcome of Surge’s Friday match. If Surge loses Friday, RØKKR can take their spot in the winner’s bracket with no strings attached. If Surge wins Friday, RØKKR can only tie their match record and hope the deciding factor of their game-win percentage is higher when all is said and done.

The second match of the day is between the Vegas Falcons and the Los Angeles Guerrillas M8. The only interest in this matchup lies in the possibility of the Falcons getting their first win of the season. The Heretics will seek a win over the Royal Ravens in Saturday’s final match. If the Heretics fail to do so and lose on Friday and Saturday, they must rely on Surge to take down RØKKR. If Surge doesn’t, the Heretics will either be knocked down to the loser’s bracket or in a game-win percentage battle with Surge to see who remains above the cutline.

Matches on Sunday, January 26th:

  • Boston Breach vs. Los Angeles Thieves - 3 PM EST / 2 PM CST / 12 PM PST
  • Atlanta FaZe vs. Cloud9 New York - 4:30 PM EST / 3:30 PM CST / 1:30 PM PST
  • Toronto Ultra vs. OpTic Texas - 6 PM EST / 5 PM CST / 3 PM PST

By Sunday, the battle of the cutline should mostly be decided. The first match between the Breach and the Thieves is purely to determine seeding for the two teams in the winner’s bracket. The final series of the day is between the current top two seeds. Toronto Ultra could take their first loss, or OpTic Texas will fall to either the third or fourth seed. Only the second match on Sunday has any bearing on the result of the cutline. If FaZe loses to Breach on Friday, Sunday’s series against Cloud9 New York is a must-win for them to avoid the cutline drama. If they win on Friday, then winning this match is just extra assurance and a bit of a better seed.

The cutline drama will unfold live this weekend on the official CDL YouTube Channel. Coverage should start 30 minutes before each day’s first match.
