JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Smith County Emergency Management gave a warning to drivers to use extreme caution after heavy rainfall led to flooding across the area.

In a social media post, the agency reminded residents that “just a few inches of moving water can sweep a vehicle off the roadway,” adding it’s often impossible to tell how deep floodwater is.

Officials say drivers should not attempt to cross flooded roads, water-covered bridges or any roadway with standing water.

“Remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown,” the post stated.

If you encounter a flooded roadway, take an alternate route and report hazardous conditions to local authorities when it is safe to do so.

“Your destination is never worth risking your life. Stay weather aware, slow down, and travel safely,” Smith County Emergency Management said.

Later that day, all county roads and state highways in Smith County were announced to be open and passable except for the following road closures:

  • SCR 559 (4060 Block)
  • SCR 563 at the bridges

Officials ask that drivers continue to use caution when traveling, especially in areas that have received heavy rainfall. Never drive around barricades or through flooded roadways.
