First Alert Weather Day: Post-Tropical Storm Arthur Brings Flash Flood and Tornado Threat
First Alert Weather
JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) -A First Alert Weather Day is in effect as the remnants of Post-Tropical Cyclone Arthur move across the region. The main concern is significant flash flooding, with widespread rainfall totals of 3 to 5 inches expected through Friday and isolated amounts of 6 to 8 inches possible, especially south and east of the Jackson metro. Saturated ground and repeated rounds of heavy rain could lead to rapidly developing flash flooding, flooded roads, rising creeks and streams, and dangerous travel conditions.
A Flood Watch remains in effect through the evening. The highest flood threat is expected early this morning through Thursday night, when bands of tropical rain may produce several inches of rainfall in just a few hours.
There is also a low-end risk for a few brief, spin-up tornadoes on Thursday. Stronger rain bands moving across central and eastern Mississippi may contain isolated tornadoes and gusty winds.
Showers and thunderstorms will continue Friday, bringing another 1 to 2 inches of rain in some areas and prolonging flooding concerns. Rain chances remain elevated into the weekend, but the overall flood threat should gradually decrease as Arthur’s remnants move away and rainfall becomes more scattered. Temperatures will remain in the upper 80s to lower 90s through early next week.
