Annual JPS Science Fair and STEAM Expo encourages learning and new possibilities
JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - It’s science time! Kids from Jackson Public Schools came out to show off their mad scientist skills for the annual JPS Science Fair and STEAM Expo.
“We enjoy seeing all of the children get excited about science. It’s a great thing that Jackson has an exhibit every year to give them exposure on different elements of STEAM, so I’m excited,” said Sheba Moses, an attendee.
It was time for JPS students to put on their thinking caps as hundreds of students came out to showcase their science experiments to their peers.
Hands-on experiments and live demonstrations filled the Mississippi Trade Mart. Some of these bright young minds even took home well-deserved awards.
The goal of the JPS Science Fair and STEAM Expo is to inspire kids about science and its limitless possibilities.
“The elementary children can see the high school scholars or see professors who are coming and judging the board who also have the same interest in STEAM,” said Kathleen Grigsby, JPS Assistant Superintendent. “Families really appreciate seeing a lot of students from our community being exposed to so much.”
Moses attended the science fair with her goddaughter. The pair have been visiting science fairs for years. Moses said getting the younger generation involved in science is crucial to their future.
“It’s exciting because it is trending. It is what’s next. I mean, if you’re not hip on science, you’re going to be lost,” Moses shared. “So, it’s great that they can get all of these exhibits and see what the future holds and what science does for the future to get their minds ticked.”
Raleigh Mozee is a young scientist who came out to the science fair to be inspired.
“Being with me and her and looking at all the signs, projects, and seeing all these bright ideas that everybody has,” Mozee said.
Organizers said they’re looking to expand this event even further next year.
