New area code coming to parts of Mississippi

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - If you live in the 662, you may no longer get a phone number reflecting that.

Starting on January 30, customers who get a new number in the 662 Area Code Overlay Region, could have new numbers with a 471 Area Code.

This according to a Thursday morning news release from the Mississippi Public Service Commission.

The new area code will only be made available when all 662 numbers are exhausted.

The area code will co-exist with the existing area code.

Customers with 471 numbers will be required to dial 10 digits for all local calls, just as customers with the 662 Area Code do today.

Existing 662 numbers will not change, and 471 numbers will only be assigned after the 662 code is exhausted.
