JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - The executive director of Mississippi’s Office of Homeland Security has been tapped to be the next U.S. Attorney for Mississippi’s Southern District.

This week, the White House announced that it was nominating Baxter Kruger for the position. The president also nominated Scott Leary to be the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District.

Department of Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell congratulated Kruger in a post on social media, thanking him for his service to the office and the state.

“Your hard work and commitment have not gone unnoticed, and this nomination is a testament to that,” he wrote. “When you work hard, good things happen, and you continue moving up!”

Both positions will be for four years. The Southern District serves 45 of the state’s 82 counties, including Hinds, Madison, Rankin, Warren and Yazoo.

Darren LaMarca previously served as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District. The Joe Biden appointee resigned after Donald Trump’s re-election.
