‘I don’t understand his reasoning’: Plan to challenge election results not a good one, Wicker says

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Sen. Roger Wicker is saying that plans to challenge the election results Wednesday may prove to be counterproductive.
This as a group of at least eleven senators lead by Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri have stepped forward, saying they will reject the election results when Congress meets January 6 to count the Electoral College votes.
Among these senators are Ted Cruz of Texas, John Kennedy of Louisiana, Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee and Tommy Tuberville of Alabama.
Congressman Steven Palazzo has also added his name to a growing list of congressmen saying they will not vote to certify the results of the 2020 election either.
In a statement, Palazzo said that he could not stand idly by and watch Mississippi be disenfranchised “while other states knowingly violated their Constitution and side-stepped their legislatures in the 2020 election.”
Sen. Wicker thinks otherwise.
“I’m going to vote to certify the election,” he told Politico, adding, “I don’t think it’s a good idea and I don’t understand [Josh Hawley’s] reasoning.”
Other notable Republicans agree with Wicker’s sentiments, including Sen. Mitt Romney and Sen. Ben Sasse, who recently made headlines when he said that those attempting to overturn the election were “playing with fire.”
Congressman Bennie Thompson, Mississippi’s only Democratic representative, has also voiced his frustration at those seeking to challenge the results of the election, tweeting, “How can any Member of Congress challenge the legitimacy of Trump’s defeat when they were elected from the SAME ballot?”
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has also asked his fellow Republicans to refrain from challenging the election results with President-elect Joe Biden’s transition spokesman decrying the effort as a “stunt.”
President Donald Trump has repeatedly made allegations of mass voter fraud, claiming on social media that the election was rigged against him. In the past few months, the president’s legal team has filed multiple lawsuits in multiple states where this alleged fraud occurred.
Most of these lawsuits have since been tossed out.
