Several prominent Democrats are crossing party lines to support Republican Governor Haley Barbour.

Among those backing the governor's bid for a second term are former Governor Bill Waller, former Lieutenant Governor Brad Dye and former U.S. Congressman Mike Espy.

Espy served as Agriculture Secretary during President Bill Clinton's first term. He says he and Barbour share Yazoo City as a hometown and have known each other for years.

"We have to do what's best for Mississippi," Espy said. "In this case it has to be the person above the party, so I'm stepping outside partisan boundaries, and I'm telling you I really intend to vote for Haley Barbour for governor."

"For the next four years, Marsha and I will do everything to earn this endorsement and respect the fact you shared your reputation with us," Barbour responded.

Barbour faces Democrat John Arthur Eaves in next month's election. Reacting to news of the endorsements, Eaves issued this statement:

"This is meaningless. People down in Moss Point are trying to recall their mayor right now, and Waller hasn't supported a Democrat since the '80s. What have Barbour and his moneychanger friends promised them? The time for special deals for friends and family is over. It's a question of who do you serve, and I'll serve my Creator by serving the people of Mississippi, and no one else."
