PARCHMAN, MS (WLBT) - A man serving 28 years for burglary-larceny has died in prison.

55-year-old Richard Beasley was pronounced dead at 5:55 a.m. on Aug. 31, 2018, at Allegiance Specialty Hospital in Greenville.

He was housed at the Mississippi State Penitentiary in Parchman. Beasley was sentenced on November 20, 2012, in Lee County.

The manner and the cause of death are pending an autopsy.

Beasley's death brings the total number of inmates deaths in the month of August to 16.

The Mississippi Department of Corrections commissioner asked the FBI and state Department of Public Safety to examine recent inmate deaths.

Commissioner Pelicia Hall said Friday that she is making the request in the interest of government transparency, though she believes most deaths were from natural causes, such as heart disease or cancer.
