JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - More changes are in store for the Metrocenter Mall in Jackson.
The 40-year-old retail space will soon be empty and in the history books, at least by that name.
Metrocenter Mall is made up of five buildings, the one in the center is called the middle mall, and it will be closed by the end of the month.
Scott Overby of Overby Commercial is one of the owners of the 550,000 square foot space that was once home to to over 100 retail stores, restaurants and a food court.
Times have changed though, he said, and the days of the big shopping malls are almost over.
"With Amazon and other online retailers, retail is dying." Overby said. "Big malls like this are closing everywhere."
According to Overby, retail shops currently occupy about 300,000 square feet of the space. Then it's about 200,000 square feet of walk ways and eating areas, all of which has to be cooled, heated and maintained. Essentially, he said, 300,000 square feet of space is paying for the extra 200,000.
"We pull out all the storefronts and we create large spaces for lease like 25 and 50,000," he said. "Call centers, workforce training centers, large users and then we can lease up to 500 thousand feet."
Overby envisions replacing the brick front of the building with glass, modernizing it and bringing the building back to life.
"The rule really is the older the property the better because they are built so solid," he said.
The five existing retailers were officially notified today and have 30 days to move.
