JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Central District Transportation Commissioner Dick Hall has announced that the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) will be opening all six lanes of the Interstate 55 South Expansion project in Hinds County on Wednesday.
"Opening all six lanes is a major step, and signifies the end of this project is on the horizon," said Hall. "However, the traveling public should continue to be on high alert, as additional work will be taking place throughout the length of the project."
Crews will finish final paving operations Tuesday night, allowing for all three lanes in both directions to be opened to traffic.
However, there will be periodic closures as crews place permanent lane markings and complete tie-ins at the entrance and exit ramps.
"MDOT appreciates the patience of the traveling public throughout the life of this project," added Hall. "Completing the expansion of I-55 South from McDowell Road to Byram will increase safety, decrease congestion and greatly reduce daily commute times on this major corridor in the Jackson-Metro."
