Sweetie Pie's soul food restaurant set to open downtown

Sweetie Pie's, the restaurant with its own reality show, to open downtown

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - The rumors are true. Sweetie Pie's Restaurant is coming to the Capital City.

In August, the soul food restaurant with its own cable show "Welcome to Sweetie Pie's," is expected to open for business in a prime location in downtown Jackson.

Renovations are underway at the corner of Congress and Amite streets.

Plaza Building property manager Roosevelt Wilson confirms that the eatery, made famous on the OWN Network series, will be making its new home in the historic building.

"Plans are to open up this section and open up this section," said Wilson, as he pointed out the planned changes on the bottom floor of the more than 90 year old building.

It is the former location of La Finestra restaurant.

"It's exciting, very exciting. We're all excited for the Plaza Building itself," said the director of Maintenance and Property Operations. "It will bring in the crowd and who gets to know the downtown area a little bit better, try to bring it back and restore it."

Robbie 'Sweetie Pie' Montgomery, star of the reality series, owns restaurants in St. Louis and Houston.

Montgomery was born in Columbus, Miss., and was one of Ike and Tina Turner's Ikettes. She performed with the duo for eight years.

Her son, Tim Norman, and nephew, Charles Crenshaw, are also featured on the show.

According to Wilson, Norman chose the Plaza Building because of its beauty and character.

"Basically they contacted our sales manager, and he did a walk through with him and he told him what our expectation was as far as expanding it and making it a real upscale restaurant," said Wilson. "So they fit the bill."

Plans also include taking out walls, expanding and adding private booths.

All is quiet now, after crews brought kitchen equipment from Houston last Thursday.

The property manager said Jackson's Sweetie Pie's will be an upscale soul food restaurant.

Other renovations will include installing street side and indoor signage and outside doors to provide privacy for residents living in the upstairs suites.

"It's a very exciting show. We're very excited to have them here," added Wilson. "It's been kinda quiet. We really weren't sure exactly when they were gonna move in, but now everything has been signed on the dotted line I think it's gonna be a very exciting feature."

Plaza management said Sweetie Pie's son has also inquired about upstairs suites on the 10th,11th and 12th floors of the building.

"Welcome to Sweetie Pie's" is in it's seventh and final season.

There is no word yet on when Montgomery and the crew will be in the Capital City.
