CLAIBORNE COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) - The mother of a child found dead eight months ago in Claiborne County took to social media in hopes of getting justice for her daughter. While the initial pathological report lists the manner of death as homicide, investigators say the case remains open.
Dedreuna Smith wants an arrest in the October 22 death of her daughter Jurayah Smith. The Claiborne county mother posted to Facebook the initial pathological examine for the 14-month-old.
The document is dated October 24, 2017. It lists the cause of death as multiple blunt head trauma. The manner of death is described as homicide.
"We understand that parents wanted results. We wanted results," said Claiborne County Sheriff Frank Davis.
The sheriff and Claiborne County District Attorney Alexander Martin are awaiting the official autopsy from the State Crime Lab.
"That is the initial finding. That is not the complete autopsy," said Davis. "The autopsy results will be given to us as soon as they complete it. They will do a lot of testing. They will do pictures. They'll do diagrams etc."
Smith said the child was in the care of her father Morris and stepmother Tkia Bevily when she died.
According to Davis, she was also in the care of several other people the same day, who have provided statements to the District Attorney.
"Once we get the initial report back from the crime lab where the autopsy has been completed then we will sit down with the D.A. again and decide what direction we will go in and if anybody or if who will be charged," added the sheriff.
The Bevilys had no comment when reached Thursday about this story.
The deceased child's mother was also asked for an interview but did not respond to the request.
