Brookhaven 10-year-old in critical condition after being shot in the head
BROOKHAVEN, MS (Mississippi News Now) - A 10-year-old is in critical condition after police say he was accidentally shot Monday.
Police arrested Taruis Maurice McNair Jr. for the shooting and charged him with aggravated assault.
That's the message Brookhaven Police Chief Kenneth Collins wants to get the message that guns in the wrong hands can be dangerous out to the people in his community and across the state.
He says this recent shooting in the city is a prime example of that.
"A lot of people are playing with weapons they don't know how to operate," said Chief Collins. "They don't understand."
10-year-old Darrius Bass is fighting for his life after being shot in head at a home on Henry Myers Street off East Monticello Street in Brookhaven.
Bass was driven to a local Brookhaven hospital, and then airlifted to Jackson. He is currently in critical condition.
"I hope he pulls through. I pray to God he pulls through," said the victim's uncle Dedric Butler.
Darrius's uncle has been by his side at the hospital since the shooting.
"Just like any other uncle or parent would be it just tore me up," added Butler.
Police say Taruis McNair Jr. was sitting in his car playing with a gun. The 10-year-old was in front the car when the gun went off striking him in the head.
"I didn't even know he was hit the first time. It just happened so fast," said the victim's cousin.
The child's cousin was there when it happened.
"I just saw him there and he was shaking so I did what I thought about doing. I took action. I had to rush him to emergency," the cousin added.
Chief Collins says McNair is charged with aggravated assault.
He also points out that the gun McNair was playing with was a weapon he stole out of a car in Brookhaven the night before and officers also reportedly found several other stolen items in his vehicle.
"I think he has six counts of auto burglary also and he could also be upgraded to negligent homicide," said Collins.
McNair is being held at the Lincoln County Jail awaiting his initial appearance.
