JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - The State Department of Education confirms an investigation is underway on a case involving teacher Daphne Sims who is also a member of the Canton Board of Aldermen.

A spokesperson says the Mississippi Department of Education received a report May 3 and the case is now under review.

In our exclusive interview with former Superintendent Cassandra Williams, she also confirms Sims was involved in an incident with a student. We have been told that student was a fifth grader.

Williams was fired last Monday by the Canton School Board.

"There was an incident with Miss Sims and a student," said Williams. "Of course the principal investigated the situation. It was confirmed by the principal that the situation took place and so there was disciplinary action administered."

Williams says the incident was also reported to the Madison County District Attorney's office and the Mississippi Department of Child Protection Services.

We have reached out to Daphne Sims for comment. So far she has not responded.
