BYRAM, MS (Mississippi News Now) - The 18-mile project that will connect I-55 in Byram to I-20 at Bolton-Norrell Road in Clinton has a name change.

Construction is underway at Parks Road and Big Creek Road in Byram. The new name of the roadway is the Hinds Parkway.

Trees are cleared and dirt work is underway at the south end of the parkway project.

Hinds County Supervisors voted to change the name to one that is simpler. Construction crews are doing work now starting behind the Kroger on Siwell Road.

That segment of the project will continue to Parks Road.

Supervisor Mike Morgan said engineers are clearing the area at the Big Creek East Connector. Workers are also in the process of building the Bridge at Big Creek.

Motorist we spoke with say eventually the parkway could shorten their travel time between Byram and Clinton. But some fear there will be more traffic during and after the project's completion.

"I don't know about this when they put this new highway coming across here," said Byram resident Amy Bullock. "Is that gonna cause a bigger problem? You know they're gonna have to make a big look to come around. That's the only thing I'm worried about".

"The only problem I see with it is dumping all this traffic that's gonna come from I-20 through Byram onto Siwell Road," said Roy Boykin of Terry. "That seems like that's gonna be a problem because when you get up to Terry Road you don't have very far between Terry Road and the interstate. It's already kind of a traffic jam there sometimes".

According to project engineers, Parks Road will be closed until June First.

The Hinds Parkway is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2019.
