JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - Jackson police are investigating a deadly shooting that happened on Montebello Drive shortly before midnight Sunday.
The victim has been identified by the coroner as 22-year-old Lonnie Montrel Taylor.
Taylor is a well-known local rapper who goes by the name "Lil Lonnie". He was a student at Jackson State University.
Shortly before 10:30 p.m., officers responded to Montebello Drive where a car had crashed into the front of a home.
Taylor was driving the car when it crashed and had been shot multiple times. He was later pronounced dead at the scene. A woman was also in the car with him and has not yet been identified. Police say that she was not injured.
Officers later learned that the back of the car had been shot into by an unknown individual as it traveled down Montebello Dr.
Name up and coming rappers from Jackson Mississippi, and Lil Lonnie led the conversation. He was already receiving recognition, and not just from locals.
"Really everywhere," said Lil Lonnie's friend Barry Stevens. "He was global, around the world. I could leave the state and people holler at me I tell them I'm from Jackson, they say 'you know Lil Lonnie? Yeah they knew him everywhere."
Stevens says he's known Lonnie since they both attended Callaway High School. He says he was moving up through the ranks, doing shows and exposing his talents to the world on social media.
"Just a positive dude," added Stevens. "Never on a negative, nothing negative, really didn't deserve it. I hate it had to end this way, but you know how it is here in Jackson. They won't let you chase your dream. Sad. You can't even chase your dream now."
Many are now is disbelief that the young artist with so much to say, has been silenced.
"I think that was really tragic 'cause he was out here, he was working, he was out here showing his love for the folks," said friend Carl Jacobs. "He was out here just trying to make his own career better."
Many well-known rappers have taken to Twitter to send their condolences to the rapper and his family.
There is no suspect or motive known at this time.
