3 on the Road: Son of a Gun
CLAIBORNE COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) - Three on the Road takes us into the backcountry with a trip to where a movie is being made. And the subject of the movie is even more far-out than it's setting.
How far off the beaten path are we talking about? Well, many of you are familiar with the Windsor ruins and how they are WAY out west of Port Gibson. Well, where the makers of the movie, "Son of a Gun" set up for a couple of days shooting is about five more miles beyond Windsor at Cane Mount Plantation. And the story the movie is based around is even more far-fetched than the location is far out.
Director Travis Mills sets it up for us.
"Son of a Gun is based on the tall tale of the mini-ball pregnancy. If you know what I'm talking about you're probably chuckling to yourself right now, because it's a little wild. Just look it up on Wikipedia," said Travis. "But it's basically about this doctor who propagated the myth of the mini-ball pregnancy and what might have been the truth behind this myth."
This is Travis Mill's 12th full-length feature, and the 5th he has made in Mississippi.
"I started the company in Arizona and then we expanded to Mississippi in 2016 with a movie we made in Brookhaven called Porches and Private Eyes," added Travis.
Travis likes to make movies here because Mississippi likes to have movies made here.
"The communities around Mississippi are super supportive of filmmakers. So people like the Harrisons who have let us use Cane Mount Plantation, Joshua McCrain in Port Gibson who basically found all of our locations for the film, they surround us and embrace us while we are making the movie. I think one reason for that is we are making a film about Mississippi history."
Or, in the case of the Son-of-a-Gun, MISS-history, but a good story.
Travis uses only local actors as much as possible. And whether the young woman reported having gotten pregnant because she was the second recipient of a mini ball that obviously left some soldier in agony on its way to her is true or not, Mississippi is getting a movie birthed from the legend of it.
