Madison and Rankin Counties' District Attorney Michael Guest announced today that Richard Lamar Green was sentenced this week to serve life in prison plus 30 years after a jury found him guilty of kidnapping and attempting to murder his wife following his trial in March.

On October 1, 2014, the Pearl police department received a 911 call that Green had attacked his wife and that she was in need of immediate medical help.

When police arrived to the home on Ivy Court, they found Mrs. Green lying on the floor of the family room bleeding.

Police and emergency personnel began to treat the victim and observed that she had been struck numerous times in the head with an object later determined to be a machete. One of her fingers had also been severed off.

The victim was taken to UMMC and treated for a traumatic brain injury.

It was determined that the victim's husband, Richard Green, had fled the area in a silver GMC Envoy and had taken their 4-year-old child with him.

Pearl Police contacted the Mississippi Highway Patrol and an Amber Alert was issued.

A truck driver, who had received the alert, contacted law enforcement to report that he had seen the defendant's vehicle and the child at a truck stop in Bogue Chitto. The caller told law enforcement he was headed to Louisiana.

Pike County Sheriff's Department arrested Green before he crossed into Louisiana. The child was found unharmed in the back of the car.

Green was transported to Rankin County and interviewed by investigators of the Pearl Police Department. He admitted that he and his wife had gotten into an argument. He told officers that he went outside, got a machete from his car and hit his wife several times in the family room with the weapon.

Guest stated, "Green is a violent and abusive individual who viciously attacked his wife in the presence of their 4-year-old child. Because of the combined efforts of the Pearl Police Department, Mississippi Department of Public Safety, the Pike County Sheriff's Department and the Brookhaven Police Department, Green will now spend the remainder of his life behind bars."

Guest concluded, "Cathy Green has used this tragic event in her life to educate and help others who may be involved in violent domestic relationships. Since her attack she has volunteered her time in domestic violence shelters and crisis centers and has spoken to numerous groups sharing the story of her life. Cathy has also been awarded the Image of Resilience Award by the Mississippi Coalition against Domestic Violence."

Green has numerous misdemeanor convictions of Domestic Assault or Domestic Violence. Court records show Green was previously been convicted of Domestic Battery in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1996. Green was also been convicted of Domestic Assault in Biloxi in 2002 and convicted of Domestic Assault in Harrison County in 2005.
