RIDGELAND, MS (Mississippi News Now) - The identities of two women who were killed in a shooting spree have been released.
Coroner Sharon Grisham Stewart confirms that 58-year-old Suzanne Hogan was killed after being shot once in the head.
This happened at the gas station on Beasley Road and Watkins Drive on Thursday night at around 6.
A witness there said he saw a man in a blue Mustang driving around the gas station. He came up to Hogan and shot her but didn't take anything.
Police have also identified the woman who was shot to death while walking to dinner from her hotel in Ridgeland last night. Police believe the two murders are connected.
The victim has been identified as 49-year-old Kristy Lynn Mitchell of Excelsior Springs, Missouri. She was in Ridgeland on a business trip.
Police say that at around 6:03 pm, as she was walking from a nearby hotel where she was staying to go to dinner at Logan's Roadhouse, she was shot.
When officers got to the scene, the victim was able to describe the suspect as a man with dreadlocks driving a blue Ford Mustang. She was then taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center where she was rushed into surgery.
Mitchell later died from the gunshot wounds.
Police say that after Mitchell was shot, the suspect fled the scene through the parking lot of the Drury Inn at a high rate of speed striking a man walking in front of the hotel.
Police say the victim is 59 years old and from Memphis, Tennessee. He was transported to River Oaks Hospital, treated and released with a broken left leg.
This victim and other witnesses at the scene also described the suspect's vehicle as a blue Ford Mustang.
At around 8 pm, Ridgeland police were notified by Jackson police that they had arrested a possible suspect in this shooting.
The suspect, Zehulum James, was located at an apartment complex in south Jackson and was driving a blue Ford Mustang. A firearm of the same caliber was also recovered as the suspect was taken into custody.
James was later charged for murder in Shell gas station shooting and taken to the Hinds County Detention Center in Raymond.
He is also a suspect in at least three other shooting incidents:
- Shooting in a Jatran Bus near the 4300 block of Watkins Drive at approximately 5:40 p.m.
- Shooting in an Occupied Dwelling at 4322 Watkins Dr. at approx. 5:50 PM.
- Shooting in an Occupied Vehicle on Watkins Dr. near Hanging Moss Rd at approx. 6:02 PM.
No motive for the shootings has been revealed.
Ridgeland police are working with the Jackson Police Department to identify evidence which will confirm that James is also responsible for the shooting death of Mitchell and the aggravated assault of the man from Drury Inn.
