August 13, 2001: Owners of Jackson's iconic Sun-N-Sand Motor Hotel announce that it will be shutting down.
The downtown fixture on Lamar Street had been a home-away-from home for state legislators for years. Many of them stayed there while the legislature was in session, taking advantage of its proximity to the State Capitol. As a result, it was the site of many informal after-hours gatherings where pending legislation was discussed and debated.
After the Sun-N-Sand closed on September 30, 2001, the fixtures were sold in an auction. Since then, the hotel's sign has remained, but the building itself is boarded-up.
