JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - Summer is here and far too many people who can't swim are near or on the water.

A study by USA Swimming found nearly 70% of minority children have low or no swimming ability.

The study is serving as a catalyst for widespread awareness.

100 Black Men of Jackson hopes to stem the tide of accidental drownings.

Swim and life saving lessons are now available for children ages 8 to 17 years old.

"We mentor the whole Jackson public schools area. Most of our students come from Jackson and the metro area. And none of our students knew how to swim. And that was a task we needed to take up," said Iday Oredein, executive director of 100 Black Men of Jackson. He says it's very alarming to learn that fact.

The organization will offer swim classes in June and July.

The cost is $100 per child or $60 for two or more children for 8 sessions.

Certified instructors and lifeguards are in the pool at all times.

Adult classes begin in July.
