JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - The church challenge is take it off. Hundreds of people, representing church congregations from all over Mississippi, were weighing in, signing up and undergoing medical screening at Jackson Medical Mall. They are preparing for the big Medical Mall in Motion church weight loss competition.

You will recall Dr. Aaron Shirley came up with the idea in May after watching my Commit to Be Fit reports, to help fight the obesity epidemic in Mississippi. The congregation that trims the most pounds, percentage-wise, wins a 5-thousand dollar cash prize.

Project manager Claude Erskine Brown said, "But that's a small award compared to the total lifestyle transformation that we're going to bring about with education. We're going to be providing, every fourth Monday of every month, here in the community meeting room and also with the gym we're utilizing, we're partnering with and all of the health, medical professionals we're partnering with, they're gonna give them information about how to maintain the weight once it's lost."

More than 15-hundred people passed through the Jackson Medical Mall community meeting room Wednesday and Thursday. The competition officially gets underway January first and lasts 10-months.
