Doctors oppose "Personhood" amendment

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - A group of Mississippi physicians voiced their opposition to a proposed constitutional amendment known as "Personhood".

They held a news conference Thursday afternoon at the State Capitol and spoke out against Initiative 26 which would declare that life begins at conception.

Opponents say Initiative 26 goes too far, allowing the government to interfere in personal medical decisions.

"If Proposition 26 passes, we're gonna place the government, legislators, politicians and attorneys between the doctor and his patient" said Dr. Randall Hines. "Mississippians don't want that. I am sure of that and I hope that they vote no to 26."

Supporters say the measure would not ban birth control, or prevent doctors from operating on women suffering from a problem pregnancy.

Mississippians will vote on the controversial issue to change state abortion laws in the November general election.
