JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Dozens gather at Battlefield Park in Jackson with a message, "stop the violence." It was the same location of a shooting that sent three people to the hospital with serious injuries seven months ago, but Saturday members of the community came together for peace.
Several people spoke about how their lives had been touched by violence in the capital city. Pam Greer organized the event in honor of her cousin Brittany Harris.
"She was murdered in McComb, Mississippi. Her boyfriend shot her five times while she was holding her baby. My cousin is no longer here. She was 23 years old," said Greer.
Organizers plan to hold the event again next year. The goal is to provide a positive atmosphere to encourage peace, hope, harmony and a solution to violence in Jackson and throughout the state.
