Mississippi Museum of Art to celebrate 100 years of art!

Throughout 2003, the Mississippi Museum of Art will celebrate its centennial year. It was 100 years ago that the first group gathered in Jackson to celebrate and study the visual arts.

In 1903, Jacksonian Bessie Cary Lemly founded the Art Study Club, a membership organization dedicated to the study of visual art. The club remains active today. Formed as an outgrowth of the Art Study Club, the Mississippi Art Association was founded in 1911 to promote the original work of Mississippi artists, writers, craftsmen, and workers in other artistic fields. The Association's objective was to establish a permanent and monumental gallery and grounds, wherein the finest examples of the work of Mississippi artists and other artists may be shown, and where collections of artwork may be accumulated and preserved.

For many years the Mississippi Art Association was homeless. In 1972, a bond issue proposed by Mayor Russell C. Davis was passed that included a museum, planetarium, and center for the arts. The Mississippi Museum of Art opened its doors in 1978 at 201 East Pascagoula Street in downtown Jackson with a collection of less than 600 works. Today the Museum boasts a multi-media collection of nearly 4,000 objects enhanced by an active education and exhibition calendar.

"The Mississippi Museum of Art is proud of its century-long tradition of gathering an important collection of art that has inspired, educated, and moved hundreds of thousands of Mississippians," states Museum Director Betsy Bradley. "With continued support from Mississippians, the Museum's legacy will live on for future generations." During 2003, the Museum will honor those who have contributed to the success of the institution and will present exhibitions, educational programs, and special events that highlight the Museum's accomplishments over the past century.

The official Centennial Celebration will take place at the Museum on Saturday, March 22, 2003 beginning at 7:00 p.m. The public is invited to join the Museum's Board and staff to officially commemorate the foresight of the Museum's founders and challenge a new generation of arts patrons with a vision for the next century.

Featured at the celebration will be a commissioned piece for the Museum's Centennial by Mississippi glass artist Elizabeth Robinson. This exquisite piece, a gift from the Mississippi Museum of Art Auxiliary, will become part of the Museum's permanent collection.
