MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC/Gray News) - A 16-year-old died after suffering a severe heat stroke earlier this month, according to his family.

Joshua Henderson’s family said he died Sunday afternoon.

Joshua’s mother said he had been in the hospital fighting for his life after passing out on the football field at Bolton High School on July 7.

Joshua’s family said he died of organ failure caused by severe heat stroke.

“Josh was only 16 years old, full of life, laughter, and promise. He was deeply loved by his parents, siblings, extended family, and all who knew him. His sudden loss has left our hearts shattered and our world forever changed,” his family said.

The school district said Joshua was a “source of light and joy to all who knew him.”

A GoFundMe has been set up by the family to help cover costs for his funeral and burial.
