FedEx founder Fred Smith dies at 80 after reported heart attack

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC/Gray News) - Fred Smith, the founder and executive chairman of FedEx, died at 80 years old.

Smith died Saturday evening after reportedly suffering a heart attack. He launched the original Federal Express network in 1973. The delivery company has since grown into an $87.7 billion global enterprise that serves more than 220 countries and territories, according to its website.

Smith stepped down as the CEO of FedEx in 2022. He was succeeded by Raj Subramaniam, who shared an official statement Saturday about Smith’s death:

“Fred was more than just the pioneer of an industry and the founder of our great company. He was the heart and soul of FedEx – its PSP culture, values, integrity, and spirit. He was a mentor to many and a source of inspiration to all.“

“He was also a proud father, grandfather, husband, Marine, and friend; please keep the entire Smith family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. As we begin to process this tremendous loss, it is important that we take care of one another and demonstrate the passion and compassion that Fred embodied every day.

“In the coming days and weeks, I know we will all find ways to honor his memory and pay tribute to his legacy.”

Smith was born in Marks, Mississippi, on August 11, 1944. He graduated from Yale University in 1966 then served for four years in the Marines. He was the father of 10 children.

FedEx is the largest private employer in the state of Tennessee.

After Smith’s death, many city and state leaders took to social media to express their gratitude to his impact on the city of Memphis.
