Witnesses: Elderly woman drives wrong way on I-55, causing ‘catastrophic’ accident

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Two people were killed after a multi-car accident occurred on I-55 South north of Siwell Road in Jackson on Friday afternoon.

Witnesses told police that an elderly woman was traveling south in the northbound lane, causing the crash.

Her car hit an oncoming vehicle, witnesses said, and both drivers were killed. At least one other driver was injured.

A City of Jackson vehicle was also involved.

Jackson police are working alongside Byram police and MHP to discover why the woman was traveling the wrong way on the interstate.

“It’s just a sad situation where a vehicle was traveling south in the northbound lane and caused this catastrophic accident...” said Assistant Police Chief Joseph Wade.
