Police: Man, small child shot after two gunmen open fire on family
MOSS POINT, Miss. (WLOX) - Authorities say a man and an eight-year-old child are recovering after being shot while attending an outdoor family gathering Wednesday in Moss Point.
According to Moss Point Police, a family gathering was taking place outdoors at the Hilma Street home around 4:30 p.m. when two gunmen opened fire on the family. Witnesses told authorities that the gunmen drove in a silver Honda with dark-tinted windows.
They say two-masked men got out of the car and began firing multiple shots, which struck a man and an eight-year-old child. However, both victims were taken to Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula and are listed in stable condition.
Even though the shooting is over, the physical and emotional damage has already been done. A total of five vehicles and two homes were also struck. The owner of one of the homes Theresa Magee-EL said that the chaos has traumatized her family.
“I’m very hurt to my son, my grandbaby and my family. They even had to run,” said Magee-El. “I was standing right in front of my stove that was shot and we usually sit in my daughter’s car that got shot up. There could have been lives lost, I thank God for protecting us from those bullets.”
Magee-El said that several of her grandchildren constantly visit her house, she wants the gun violence to end before another family member gets hurt.
“The violence has to stop,” said Magee-El. “All of this gun violence and killing people needs to end, you all will end up either dead or in jail. God isn’t please with what you all are doing. You all will have kids and grandkids one day, you wouldn’t want them doing this.”
Magee-El and some of her neighbors said that they are surprised the shooting happened on the street because it is usually peaceful.
“I’ve lived here 40 years and haven’t heard of anything like this. This is such an unfortunate situation and I don’t want to hear about something like this happening again,” said Hilma resident, Herman Odom.
Surprisingly, police captured the vehicle used in the shooting and said the car was stolen out of Moss Point about a month ago. It was found Thursday on Elder Street in Moss Point after someone tipped off Pascagoula Police to its location.
Moss Point Police recovered the vehicle and processed it for evidence.
