JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Twenty-four hours after Mississippi’s 2021 winter storm, the snow may have melted away, but it left behind some icy roads, bridges and overpasses.
Mississippi’s Department of Transportation (MDOT) is warning drivers to be on alert for black ice or frozen water on the roadways.
MDOT says what makes black ice so dangerous, is that it’s transparent like water and hard to see while driving.
If you hit an ice patch, stay calm, and don’t panic.
MDOT says to keep your hands on the wheel, avoid slamming on your brakes, take your foot off the gas and turn your wheel in the direction you are sliding.
Officials encourage drivers to give themselves extra time to reach their destination.
