USM football adds 2 Ole Miss transfers to 2021 signing class

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – University of Southern Miss football coach Will Hall announced the additions of two more transfers to his first signing class.

The addition of Ole Miss defensive backs Jay Stanley of Greenwood, and Lakevias Daniel of Louisville brought the 2021 signing class to 13, with 12 of the signees Mississippi natives.

Both are expected to enroll for the upcoming semester and take part in spring practice.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Stanley played in 16 games over the last two seasons. In 2020, Stanley played in seven games and totaled six tackles to go along with a pass breakup.

He appeared in nine games with two starts at strong safety as a freshman in 2019, registered 20 tackles with one pass breakup.

He also made the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll in spring 2020.

Stanley played one season at Brandon High School, earning Class 6A All-State first team honors in 2018 and helping the Bulldogs to the 6A South State title game. He totaled 129 tackles and seven tackles for loss as senior, adding three interceptions, five forced fumbles and seven pass deflections.

Stanley attended Greenwood High School prior to Brandon. As a quarterback, he threw for 1,030 yards with eight touchdowns with an interception. He also ran for 830 yards and 17 scores.

On the defensive side of the ball, Stanley finished with 70 tackles, with five tackles for loss, including three sacks. He also came up two fumble recoveries and two pass deflections.

The 6-0, 170-pound Daniel appeared in five games in his only season with the Rebels, making three solo tackles.

Danele spent two seasons at Jones College, earning All-Region 23 honors as a sophomore after recording 18 tackles, three interceptions, three pass breakups, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

As a freshman, he had seven tackles and an interception, and was named second-team All-Mississippi Athletic Community and Junior Colleges South Division honors.

As a senior at Louisville High School, Daniel made 33 tackles and defended four passes, helping the Wildcats to the North State title game as a senior.

USM now has five transfers in the 2021 class, four from Power Five conference schools and four with Mississippi roots.
