JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - In our weekly editorials we typically focus on local and state topics, and that was the plan this week. Then Wednesday happened.
Watching the chaos and destruction in Washington brought back terrible memories of past attacks on our democracy. What happened this week should be a huge wake up call for all of us.
We are a divided nation, but there is never a time where it is okay for that divide to turn violent. It does not matter which organization, which cause or which side you are on. That behavior is unacceptable.
One of the biggest issues contributing to this nonsense is that many people only consume opinions that match their own beliefs. That is very dangerous. What happened to the days when we could have a conversation, debate the issues, listen to both sides and even if we still disagree, we have respect for each other?
We need to get that back.
Social media has had a big impact on that divide, that lack of decorum, and social media companies, Big Tech, should be held accountable for allowing people to spew their hate without consequence. And national cable “news” networks are also at fault.
They should rebrand their marketing to cable “opinion” networks, because that is what they are. All of them: CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, News Max, the list goes on. They are all platforms with biased bloviators stoking the fire.
What happened this week is a low point in our country. But just like other challenging times, we will overcome and be better. We are still the greatest country in the world. May God Bless America. We need it.
