WACO, Tx. - Going against the No. 2 ranked team in the nation, the Alcorn State University men’s basketball team put up a season-high 76 points, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Baylor Bears claimed the 105-76 victory Wednesday inside the Ferrell Center.

Alcorn (0-5) posted a new season-high in points, eclipsing the previous high of 65 at Liberty. The 24 made field goals ties for the most in a game so far this season set in the previous game at Vanderbilt. The six three-pointers made tied the season-high mark first set at Liberty. The Braves also set season-highs in free throws made (22), assists (10) and steals (9).

Junior forward Tyree Corbett scored a season-high 24 points to lead Alcorn and all scorers. Corbett went 9-15 from the field, added a pair of three-pointers, went 4-4 from the foul line, grabbed seven rebounds and tallied four steals. Junior guard David Pierce III collected 13 points and freshman guard Byron Joshua tallied 12 points to give the Braves three in double-figures. Joshua added a team-high eight assists and pulled down five rebounds. Ten Braves tallied at least a point.

Alcorn shot over 50 percent from the field in the first half connecting on 11-21 (52.38) and after adding a 13-32 clip (40.63) in the second half, the Braves finished making 24-53 (45.3). Alcorn went 6-17 (35.3) from three and 22-33 (66.7) at the foul line.

Baylor (8-0) opened the scoring moving out to a 3-0 lead 22 seconds in. Corbett got the Braves on the board hitting a pair from the line just over a minute in. A Corbett layup tied the game and a jumper by Kurk Lee gave Alcorn their first lead of the game at 6-4 nearly three minutes in.

The lead stretched to four a minute later on a jumper by Arne Morris and after the Bears regained the lead, Corbett hit back-to-back shots to keep the game tied at 12. Following an 11-0 run by Baylor, Kobe Wilson’s layup near the midway point of the half kept the lead at nine for the Bears before Baylor closed on a 36-13 run to take a 59-27 lead at halftime.

The Braves started the second half on a 6-2 run with Oddyst Walker accounting for five of the points during the stretch. Alcorn closed the final minutes strong going on a 9-0 run with Pierce III hitting two from the line, Walker adding a pair from the line and after Corbett hit two more from the charity stripe, Myson Lowe closed the run with a three-pointer. Over the final four minutes of the game, Alcorn outscored Baylor 19-7 before the Bears took the 105-76 victory.

MaCio Teague led Baylor with 18 points as six Bears reached double-figures in scoring. Baylor connected on 34-63 from the field (54), 12-28 (42.9) from three and 25-31 (80.6) at the foul line. Alcorn stayed right with Baylor in a couple of categories as the Bears held a slight edge in second chance points (18-17) and bench points (47-46).

With the home opener this Saturday against Texas Southern postponed, Alcorn will now look to open their home portion and SWAC part of the schedule this coming Monday, January 4 against Prairie View A&M starting at 7:30 p.m. immediately following the Lady Braves game that starts at 5:30 p.m.
