JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - One man is in critical condition after a shooting at a motel Monday morning.
It happened just before 9 a.m. in the 5000 block of I-55N after a fight broke out between two men.
The other man was also wounded and arrived at the hospital by a private vehicle. He is currently in stable condition.
Witnesses are disturbed by the trending violence across the Capitol City.
Richard Clark said, “We need plans in place, you know the kind to curb this crime with the younger youth. There’s a lot that goes on there’s some things we can’t control there’s a lot of things we can.”
During his weekly press briefing Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba addressed the rising violence on the streets of Jackson.
Mayor Lumumba said, “I’m not saying that we don’t need more officers, I’m not saying that we don’t have to grow our ranks. I believe we do but what I’m saying that is just one of the whole, so we have to make certain that we focus equally on the other parts of that.”
Although the police department is short hundreds of officers, mayor Lumumba says factors like poverty and mental health also need to be addressed to find a solution.
The city has started an operation called Safe Inn. Police are addressing drugs, prostitution and other crimes at motels especially in the I-55 north corridor where Monday’s shooting happened.
The victims of today’s shooting have not been identified.
The investigation is ongoing.
