GAUTIER, Miss. (WLOX) - A man wanted in Hancock County is in FBI custody after a task force agent was shot outside an extended stay hotel in Gautier on Tuesday morning.
Sheriff Mike Ezell said officers arrived at the Siegel Select Hotel with the intent to arrest Joseph Dale Sonnier, when the suspect opened fire on the officers.
A deputy of the U.S. Marshal Gulf Coast Fugitive Task Force was shot once in the neck and later transported to Ocean Springs Hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries. He has since been released from the hospital.
Sonnier is wanted in Hancock County for two counts of kidnapping, two counts of aggravated assault, armed robbery, and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. Now, federal charges are pending against him.
Multiple agencies responded to the shooting including a U.S. Border Patrol agent and sheriff deputies, but the FBI is heading up the investigation along with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI).
