PEARL, Miss. (WLBT) - Pearl High School announced a new head football coach Friday.

Longtime head coach John Perry accepted a job as the head coach of Nixa High School in Missouri.

Perry leaves after 12 years as head coach in Pearl and 18 years experience as a head coach.

Offensive coordinator Justin Hunter was announced as the new head coach of the Pirates.

Hunter coached under Perry and calls Pearl home.

“We want to be here for a long time,” he said.

He wants to continue a winning tradition, but wants the team to see him as a loving husband and father as well.

“Pearl football is big in this state, and that’s because of Coach Perry,” Hunter said.

Hunter previously served as head coach at Noxapater High School from 2009 to 2013 before coming to Pearl. His team won the 1A state championship in 2011.

Hunter’s record as a head coach is 18-7.
