COLDWATER, Miss. (WMC) - The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting that left both an officer and the suspect injured Saturday.

According to District Attorney John Champion, the incident stemmed from a traffic stop on Highway 306 and Highway 51. While the officer was stopping another vehicle a man in a green truck approached the officer with a knife in hand.

Champion says the suspect returned to his truck after being warded off by the officer. He took a shotgun out of the vehicle and shot at the officer twice, striking him in the head. The officer returned fire hitting the suspect in the “middle area.”

Champion says the suspect got into his truck and drove about a mile down the highway where he was taken into custody. Investigators are unsure what caused the suspect’s behavior.

The suspect is in the hospital, the officer has been released. Officials will not be releasing their names at this time.

Witnesses are being interviewed. This is an ongoing investigation.
