JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Hinds County Sheriff’s Office issued a warning about a scam that’s going around.
They say a caller at 601-401-2577 is pretending to be a Hinds County deputy in order to scam people out of money.
“So I answered the phone and I see it is a number from Flora, Mississippi. I answered and this gentleman said ‘Is this Julie Crump?’"
Crump is one of many who received a mysterious phone call from a man identifying himself as “Chief Deputy John Ledbetter” with the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department.
“I was thinking to myself, ‘Wow, everyone needs to know about this!’”
The man told Crump she owed money for a missed court date. Luckily she didn’t fall for the crooks games.
“I have an 81-year-old mother who I worry about and try to educate. The vulnerable ones are the ones who would give out their card.”
The Hinds County Sheriff Department will never ask you to pay a fine over the phone.
“Of course this person wanted payment via telephone, but the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department does not practice by collecting money or unpaid fees over the telephone. You must appear in person.”
Jones says if it doesn’t sound right, trust your gut and avoid falling into a criminals trap.
“You can always feel free to reach out to the Hinds County Sheriffs Department if you feel you are a victim to this crime as well.”
