JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - In one week, the City of Jackson has seen 14 separate shooting incidents, leaving 13 people wounded and 5 dead.
This has made the week of December 2-9 the most violent week the Capital City has seen since 2019 began.
There was also one man stabbed after an argument at the Greyhound Bus Station on Thursday. He had injuries to the arm, but they were not life-threatening.
Five people were shot in a 24-hour period from Tuesday, December 5th to Wednesday, December 4th.
This included a woman being shot in the hip during an attempted robbery, a man being shot in the leg while at the Travel Inn Motel and a man being shot in the leg near the Jackson State University campus.
None of these shootings were fatal.
There were also three shooting on the interstate this week, with two of those shootings happening in Jackson.
19-year-old Jauan Tolbert was shot in head and killed while driving on I-55 N near Beasley Road early Monday morning.
The second man involved in an interstate shooting this week was 29-year-old Jorge Velazquez Morales.
He was shot in the back and killed while riding on I-20 Frontage Road near Gallatin Street around 2:30 a.m. Friday morning.
Another passenger in the vehicle also suffered a graze wound.
Four people were shot and two were killed in separate shootings on Saturday.
The two men killed were in vehicles at the time of their being shot.
One would crash into a shed Saturday evening after a fight broke out between two men on Kennington Avenue.
Another man was found in his vehicle later that night with a gunshot wound to the head.
And six people were shot Sunday.
Two teenagers were taken to the hospital after an early morning shooting on McDowell Road.
One of the teenagers is in critical condition after suffering a gunshot wound to the face.
The other teen suffered non life-threatening wounds to the leg.
Another woman was shot in the foot by her boyfriend around 8:30 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 3800 block of I-55 S.
The last incident of the week would be a triple shooting at the Northwood Village Apartments Sunday night, injuring two and killing one.
“This week was very, very heartbreaking,” said Chief of Police at a press conference Monday. “You havin’ people call.. of a shooting and you come to find out.. it’s over nothing.”
So far there have been 78 homicides in the City of Jackson this year.
