Prosecutor: Police kill man who shot wife after child calls 911 for help
HORN LAKE, Miss. (WMC) - The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting in Horn Lake.
Prosecutor John Champion says a child called 911 around 7:45 a.m. Tuesday and said her father shot her mother.
What led up to the initial shooting remains under investigation, though neighbors say the couple had a history of domestic violence.
Officers responded to the scene on Winterwood Drive and learned the man was inside the house with a weapon.
Champion says a group of officers spoke to the man on one side of the house while other officers pulled the woman to safety on the other side of the house. She was reportedly in “extremely critical condition" and flown to the hospital.
“My stepdad saw the kids come outside and he was yelling at them to go to the cops that were up the street. And then I came to see what was going on and I saw all the cops surrounding the house,” said Kristopher Dexter, who lives across the street.
Champion says officers fatally shot the man when he would not comply.
“We watched him come outside with a gun. He walked around the yard for a little bit. They went in and grabbed her and ran her up the street. And then he went and sat on the corner and it all happened,” said Dexter. “They were telling him to think about his kids. That like they need a father."
Three children were inside the home at the time of the shooting but they were not injured.
At last check their mother is still in critical condition.
“I pray that she comes through. I hope that she’s alright. Because I know it’s hard already losing one parent, but two in the same time that’s hard,” said Joshua Cason, who lives next door.
Horn Lake Police requested MBI take the lead on the deadly shooting investigation.
Right now, state investigators are not releasing either name.
