PELAHATCHIE, Miss. (WLBT) - One person is in custody after a deadly shooting in Pelahatchie.
According to Pelahatchie Police Chief Daughtry, the shooting happened at 6:45 p.m. Sunday night in the 100 block of North Brooks Avenue.
Coroner David Ruth confirms the victim is 21-year-old Brandon Lewis.
William Ray Holley, 23, has been charged with manslaughter and faces a $20,000 bond after his initial appearance on Monday.
Lewis was out of jail, awaiting trial for the Christmas 2017 fatal shooting of his father, William Adcock of Lena. Lewis admitted to the shooting and was charged with murder and other charges.
Daughtry said Lewis was shot once in the upper torso with a small-caliber weapon. There were also four small children and a woman on the scene, the chief said, but he said it’s too early to tell if the shooting was as a result of some kind of a love triangle. He did say that it’s not clear if the alleged shooter and the victim knew each other.
The shooting happened just as the Pelahatchie Baptist Church across the street was letting out for the evening. Daughtry said church members helped with the children, bringing them juice and comforting them.
“As an adult these kinds of things are not normal for us to see, much less for small toddlers to see,” Daughtry said.
Holley was arrested on scene and without incident, the chief said.
Rankin County Sheriff’s Department is assisting with this investigation.
Mayor Ryshonda Harper Beechem of Pelahatchie released a statement on the shooting.
