JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Chornell Mayfield, a 25-year-old black woman, died Tuesday, May 21, 2019, after sustaining brain injuries that left her comatose and hospitalized for more than two years, according to Jackson police.
Sgt. Roderick Holmes said it happened March 30, 2017, when a woman plowed into the front yard of a home on Overstreet Avenue and ran over Mayfield twice.
At the time, that driver, identified as 29-year-old Brittany Carter, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and leaving the scene of a crime.
A judge in 2017 set her bond at $20,000.
The blunt force trauma resulted in brain injuries that left Mayfield on life support until her death Tuesday.
Holmes said Carter’s charges have since been upgraded to murder and she has been denied bond in the case.
