Jackson State blasts UAPB 14-4 and advances in SWAC Baseball Tournament

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WLBT) - Jackson State routed Arkansas-Pine Bluff 14-4 in seven innings and advanced to the next round of the 2019 SWAC baseball tournament.

JSU will play Texas Southern/Southern Friday at noon, with the winner of that game playing again at 6 p.m.

The Tigers opened up a 6-0 first inning lead. Raul Hernandez delivered an RBI and Chris Prentiss scored on a throwing error. Wesley Reyes came through with an RBI single to left field and Dezmond Chumley singled up the middle to score two runs. Tyler Culpepper capped the scoring with an RBI triple.

UAPB rallied with three runs in the third inning, but the Tigers countered with six runs in their half of the inning. Chumley sacrifice’s fly and Marshal Luiz’s RBI scored a pair of runs. Prentiss delivered an RBI single and Jaylyn Williams double to center field scored two more runs. J. Williams then scored on a balk and the Tigers led 12-3.

Chumley hit a solo home run in the fourth inning and Luiz also crossed home plate to close out the scoring.

Chumley batted 2-for-3 with four RBI and also scored a pair of runs. Prentiss went 3-for-4 with an RBI and J. Williams finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Rahman Williams batted 1-for-4 and Raul Hernandez went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

As a team, the Tigers pounded out 12 hits.

Garth Cahill tossed a complete game and kept UAPB off balance. The senior allowed 10 hits, four runs (two earned) and did not walk a batter and fanned three batters.
