3 On Your Side tags along with a cop for National Police Week

Ride along with a cop because... it’s National Police Week

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - This week is all about celebrating and honoring law enforcement, the ones who put their lives on the line every day to protect our community.

In honor of National Police Week, 3 On Your Side got the inside scoop on what it’s really like in the day of the life of those in law enforcement.

Lieutenant Craig Williams has patrolled the streets of Rankin County for the past 28 years.

“I have always had a desire to help people," he said. "It was honestly a calling for me.”

Lt. Williams says he puts on his uniform everyday for the people he promises to serve and for the apple of his eye, his eight-year-old daughter Maddie.

“My daughter just loves the idea that her daddy is a police officer," he said. "Our world revolves around her.”

His career choice definitely causes some worry, but Lt. Williams says he has made a special promise to his angel.

“She said ‘Daddy, are there any bad guys that want to hurt you?’ That hit me," said Lt. Williams. "I told her ‘I promise you this, I am going to do whatever it takes to come home to you and mama every night, no matter what.’”

Lt. Williams says that to him, his coworkers aren’t just a team -- they are his family.

“We spend more time with our coworkers than our family," he said. “We eat all our meals together. We see so much and have to lean on each others shoulders. We are each other’s sounding boards.”

Rankin County Sheriff’s Department Investigator A.J. Dimartino comes from a long line of law enforcement officers.

“I want to know that I do what I can to make this community better," said Investigator Dimartino. “Not only for my friends and my neighbors, but for my kids.”

With two little girls at home, Investigator Dimartino say he owes it all to one special person.

“My wife is amazing," he said. "She gets the kids ready and keeps everything settled at home.”

The investigator says at the end of the day his top priority is protecting his community and taking care of his family.

“We want to make our community as safe of a places as we can because we are all in this together.”
