CLINTON, MS (WLBT) - A 15-year-old special needs girl and her biological mother were found in Clinton Wednesday morning after the teen was kidnapped by her mother from Florida on Monday.
According to Charlotte County officials, 53-year-old Brenda Cambron was arrested by local officials in Clinton, Mississippi on open warrants after being located in the McDonald’s parking lot. Cambron was wanted on charges of kidnapping, interference of child custody and removing a minor from the state.
Sage was reported missing Monday, May 13, from her foster home in Port Charlotte, Florida by her foster guardian. The guardian told law enforcement that even though Sage is 15, she has an autism diagnosis and demonstrates the mental capacity of a 5-year-old. Deputies confirmed that she requires daily guidance and care due to her intellectual abilities.
After a search of her neighborhood, detectives identified Sage’s biological parents, Brenda and Christopher Cambron, as persons of interest in her disappearance. Sage’s father was contacted at his home in Louisiana and arrested shortly after on unrelated drug charges, but neither Brenda nor Sage were located at the home.
Sage’s biological parents previously had their privileges revoked by Florida Department of Children and Families and have current no contact orders that prevent them from contacting her.
Detectives began tracking Brenda’s phone Tuesday, which she then turned off for an extended period of time. An analyst assigned to the Major Crimes Unit observed the phone was pinging again Wednesday morning from a cell phone tower off Interstate 20 in Mississippi. The analyst brought up maps of the area, examined the pinged locations and contacted the local police department by phone to make them aware of the situation.
Clinton police responded to the area, searching hotel parking lots. An alert officer located Brenda’s Honda in the McDonald’s parking lot and also noticed that the tag on the vehicle was no longer the assigned Florida tag. Their agency will be investigating the possible theft of the tag that was affixed to the vehicle.
Sage appeared to be in good health at the time of her recovery.
Clinton officials said it’s possible that Sage’s father will also face charges in Florida. It is undetermined at this time whether Brenda will be transferred to Louisiana or Florida at this time.
The lead agency working this case is Partnership for Strong Families in Florida. Clinton police are currently talking with Charlotte County officials and coordinating with local and Florida Department of Human Services personnel.
