JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Jackson police are investigating a deadly Monday afternoon shooting in the 800 block of Powell Rhodes Drive.
On Monday, a 39-year-old man was found unresponsive and lying on the porch suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead on scene.
Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart identified the victim as Mario Ledbetter.
According to Jackson Police Chief James Davis, Ledbetter was out on bond for the 2017 stabbing death of 36-year-old Jason Madison. He was set to appear in court on May 20.
Davis said he was unable to confirm whether Ledbetter’s death was possible retaliation for that incident.
A 42-year-old man later arrived at a local hospital with a gunshot wound. His injury is believed to have been sustained earlier on the same street.
His condition is critical but stable and his involvement, if any, is unknown at this time.
A third man surrendered himself to police in connection with the shooting.
He was identified as 42-year-old Joseph Kelly and he was charged with murder. A firearm was recovered from the scene.
Police say that the suspect and victim got into some kind of fight just moments before the shooting.
Kelly remains in custody as he awaits his initial court appearance.
This is an ongoing investigation.
