JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Rodrick Johnson, a 14-year-old black male, died Sunday, April 21, 2019, not far from his northwest Jackson home, according to the Jackson Police Department.
Sgt. Roderick Holmes said it happened on Bishop Avenue near Eminence Row on Easter Sunday night.
Johnson’s grandmother Lebertha said Rodrick and two others were riding their bikes when a man shot into the crowd, hitting Rodrick in the back.
Police have charged 41-year-old Stacy Lidell with murder.
While an exact motive remains unclear, investigators have said theft and Lidell’s bicycle were connected to the case, but would not say Johnson or his friends tried to steal anything.
Johnson’s mentor, Joshua Quinn, described the 14-year-old Powell Middle School as “smart beyond his years.”
“I wanted to make sure that there was no image painted of him as this thug kid,” Quinn said. “Definitely not the case at all. This kid was bright. He was very intellectual.”
