MADISON, MS (WLBT) - The city of Madison is keeping a close eye on homeowners to make sure their properties are in compliance with new maintenance codes.
The city approved new requirements for homes and businesses and hired code enforcement officer Miriam Ethridge.
She says she’s found hundreds of homeowners who are letting their property go down by not keeping up their yards, having overgrown shrubs or peeling paint on the home.
Ethridge tells us the new enforcement will help maintain property value.
“Madison is an upscale neighborhood," says Ethridge. "We all have to admit that. We want to keep it that way. You don’t have to live in a million dollar house to have pride in where you live.”
If a homeowner does not fix the problem, the matter is turned over to environmental court where fines could be $1,000 or more.
