JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - A Jackson parent gets a surprise honor from the Jackson Public School District Wednesday. Cheryl Smith is actually a grandmother who is raising a Jackson Public Schools elementary school student.
Her grandchild nominated her and her passion for giving back, didn’t go unnoticed by by school administrators.
Cheryl Smith said, “I do what I do because I love children. I’m a retired art teacher. I taught until my body gave out. You know, so now I come when I want to; not because I have to.”
“It’s important for everybody to give back to the schools because there’s something that each person can do to each child. Because what one person has might not be for every child” Smith continued.
Each year, districts across the state select a parent who has displayed outstanding qualities when it comes to enhancing scholar experiences and cultivating partnerships in their school community.
Smith and other finalists from each congressional district will now be considered for the 2019 Mississippi Parent of the Year award.
